Connections can either be `F33f`_`[soldered`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Solder]`_`f, or made using terminal blocks. Distribution frames may grow to extremely large sizes. In major installations, audio distribution frames can have as many as 10,000 incoming and outgoing separate copper wires (`F33f`_`[balanced audio`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Balanced_audio]`_`f signals require two wires plus `F33f`_`[earth ground`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Earth_ground]`_`f for each signal). Telephone signals do not use a separate earth ground wire, but some urban `F33f`_`[exchanges`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Telephone_exchange]`_`f have about 250,000 wires on their MDF. Installing and rewiring these jumpers is a labour-intensive task, leading to attempts in the industry to devise so-called active distribution frames or `F33f`_`[Automated Main Distribution Frames`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Automated_Main_Distribution_Frame]`_`f. The principal issues which stand in the way of their widespread adoption are cost and reliability.
Newer `F33f`_`[digital`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Digital_data]`_`f `F33f`_`[mixing consoles`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Mixing_console]`_`f can act as control points for a distribution frame or `F33f`_`[router`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Router_(computing)]`_`f, which can handle audio from multiple studios (even for multiple co-located `F33f`_`[radio`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Radio_station]`_`f or `F33f`_`[TV`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Television_station]`_`f stations) at the same time. This has the advantage of not having to route dozens of feeds through walls (and sometimes floors and ceilings) to a single point.
